You might think WWA stands for Washington Wine Academy, in which case you’d be right but it also stands for something else: Wannabe Winemakers Anonymous. But we are ready to remedy that- join the Washington Wine Academy on our first foray into winemaking! We’re going to stop being theoretical and start getting dirty- literally.
Washington Wine Academy is teaming with Vint Hill Craft Winery to make our own barrel of Petit Manseng during the 2010 vintage, and we’re offering you an opportunity to make it with us. Become a part owner of the WWA barrel and be as involved in the wine making process as you want. Vint Hill is located in Warrenton, Virginia- an easy trip from Washington, D.C.- and one of very few custom winemaking facilities in the U.S. Aren’t familiar with Petit Manseng? It’s a white grape, originally from France, but Virginia versions have been absolutely stunning with some people saying “It’s a grape MADE to grow in Virginia!”
We kick off with a “Winemaking 101” at our Education Center right before harvest where Vint Hill’s Wine Geniuses will preview the process for us. There will then be two chances this fall to head out to Vint Hill and get dirty, starting the winemaking process. In fairness, due to the whims of Mother Nature it might not be our fruit, but we’ll tell you a secret- it’s the same process for pretty much all fruit- and give you as much advanced notice as possible. We head back out when it’s time to rack and- more importantly- taste from the barrel how our wine is evolving. Attend a winter seminar with Vint Hill’s experts as, just like the Washington Wine Academy, Vint Hill is focused on education and wants you to really understand the whole winemaking process. After bottling, we’ll have a goodbye party where we celebrate the end- and you’ll walk away with a case of our wine and a great story to tell your friends.
Best part?? It’s only $450 for the whole experience! We know, we’re practically giving it away, but we want you to come, learn, and get hands on with us so sign up now before the spots fill up!

Washington Wine Academy to Make 2010 Barrel at Vint Hill Craft Winery...
Washington, D.C.—June 3, 2010— The Washington Wine Academy is thrilled to announce a partnership with Vint Hill Craft Winery to make a barrel during the 2010 harvest. Students and friends of the Washington Wine Academy will assume part ownership of the barrel, participating in its making and monitoring over the course of vintage and keeping a case of the finished wine.
In consultation with the winemakers at Vint Hill, Washington Wine Academy decided to make Petit Manseng, a variety of French heritage which has shown stunning potential in Virginia. The wine will be both fermented and aged in Acacia barrels, modeled off a similar wine produced by Vint Hill under its own label during the 2009 vintage which it will enter in the Governor’s Cup at the 2010 Virginia State Fair.
